Read MoreI’ve made up another version of my Gatekeeper Quilt Pattern this year because I truly looooooove Irish Chains. Nothing beats the sweet simplicity of the Irish Chain quilt block and look. This version is fresh and modern, yet completely founded in traditional patchwork. It’s a great advanced beginner pattern because it is made up completely of only squares and rectangles. Basic piecing - yet such a stunning and classy look. I love how this turned out!
I chose to use the Delfina fabric line from Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts. I absolutely love her designs. She puts together stunning collections that vary in color, scale, and design. However, most of time, her lines are too traditional for my taste. When this Delfina line arrived at the shop, using rich beautiful blues and polka dots, I knew it would make a great line for me sew with. I sketched it up in EQ8 for Gatekeeper right away.
It never ceases to amaze me how the quilting makes each and every quilt come alive. You finish a top, and think “Yeah, this looks good”, and then it’s quilted. An entirely new life is breathed into the flimsy top. Estill quilted this for me - I think it was over the lockdown - so the shop wasn’t open, and I wasn’t able to chat with him about design. I just asked that he pick out a good design for me. Boy, did he ever! It’s texture is just amazing!
Here is a full shot of the quilt, so you can see what it looks like top to bottom. I love the way the sashing radiates off the quilt. It’s just a tiny little modern flair added to a very traditional quilt design.

I cannot get enough of the Gatekeeper Quilt. It takes on a different personality with each version I make. This is my 4th Gatekeeper. I just keep coming back. It’s construction is made up of squares and rectangles only. Add strip piecing to boot… It’s an oldie, but goodie. Here is the Nautical Blues version of Gatekeeper.

Flame and fire. Be it the small romantic glow of candlelight in a room, the refined and controlled cozy heat from a fireplace, or the wild crackle of a bonfire, we are captured by flame and fire. Soothing and mesmerizing. As summer turns into autumn, fire and candleight become more present as lasting daylight fades. This block captures our fascination with the flame.

Today I’m sharing a quilt finish……. loooooong time in the making. I started working on this Jack and Benny Quilt in November of 2018. I had to scroll way back on Instagram to figure out exactly when I started this project. In my on-again, off-again approach to this project, the final pics are proof that good things come to those who wait! It took forever… but it was worth it!
Here we are at August and Block #8. It’s hard to imagine needing mittens right now, as the heat is blazing here in the late summer. But let’s do out best to get in the hygge mood this month. We are sewing 3 Mitten blocks. When I think of fall and winter, I love how knitted hats and mittens have become not just items to be used in cold weather, but also a fashion statement that completes a cozy look. Do you reserve mittens and a beanie for only days when it snows? Or are they regular wears in winter months? I’m always cold, so they are a cool weather staple for me.
Block #7 is one of my favorites! This month we are sewing 2 Furry Friend blocks. Oh my gosh, what would we do without pets! It is amazing how their presence can fill our homes and bring so much joy and laughter. We have 3 cats, and although they are almost silent, it is unbelievable how much love and depth they bring to our home. They are always around when one of my boys is upset, and needs 5 minutes of petting time to calm down. One loves to come sit on my lap and knead my side while she purrs. Pets are good company indeed.
This labor of love is coming out later this summer! I'm happy to say my pandemic project is going to be released soon and I am currently taking Pre-Orders for signed copies if any one is interested. Meet Hoop Quilts for Beginners...

I love to watch the sun disappear over the wooded hills of the lake we frequent. The slow decent of the sun and the arrival of the stars made me want to design a quilt with many stars twinkling on the soft and almost neutral-colored sky during the golden hour.
